ELECTRIC LINES BOOT CAMP
The Utility Military Assistance Program: Electric Lines Boot Camp
trains National Guard members, Reservists and Honorably Discharged military veterans.
The program is designed to provide the requisite skills and knowledge an individual will need for a successful career within the electricity sector. UMAP Electric Lines Boot Camp will provide a free ten-day, pre-apprenticeship training in Potterville, MI provided by Consumers Energy (Michigan’s largest utility provider), followed by a four-day pass/fail assessment. Successful candidates will then begin as paid Basic Line Apprentices and complete an 11-week pass/fail climbing school in Marshall, MI followed by a 4-year apprenticeship placement anywhere in the lower peninsula of Michigan.

LINEWORKER APPRENTICE
Under direct supervision, performs the duties required in the operation, maintenance, and construction of the electric distribution, sub-transmission, transmission and communication lines, and associated equipment.

- Determining site and location for direct buried systems and directing the required work of constructing and maintaining de-energized direct buried systems or energized direct buried systems not exceeding secondary voltages.
- Repairing and maintaining all types of streetlights and street lighting systems.
- Installing, inspecting, removing, maintaining,
and repairing: Installing and replacing fuses
and self-contained watt-hour meters on
customer premises.
- Poles, towers, cross arms, braces, pins, insulators, hardware, secondary racks, brackets, guys, transformer supports, and other supporting structures.
- Wires and other conductors.
- Transformers, lightning arresters, fuses and switches.
- Communication equipment.
- Associated equipment.
- Cutting and removing trees, branches and brush in the performance of their duties.
- Investigating customers' complaints and unmetered use of electrical energy.
- Must be familiar with the Company's electrical switching and tagging rules.
- Staking and locating underground utilities.
- Connecting or disconnecting energized lines of all voltages; performing switching as directed.
- Performing other similar and related work.
qualifications
- High School diploma / GED (required).
- Must have all of the qualifications of a Basic
Lines Apprentice, including:
- Must meet the minimum educational requirements which enable him/her to read, write, speak and understand English, and must have acquired a knowledge of some of the simple practical mechanical principles involved in the operation of automotive equipment, the proper methods of storing and handling materials frequently used and the use and care of the more common tools; and
- Must be eligible to obtain a CDL and demonstrate ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.
- Must have attended the three-day basic lines apprentice orientation program.
- Must be able to advance through the Electric Line Apprenticeship Training.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintenance of Electric Distribution systems as well as facilities and ancillary support process for all utility operations.
- Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects.
- Individual possesses the skills to lead, problem solve, and work well in a team environment.
- Individual should exemplify safe work practices and follow the company’s compliance standards.

- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
- Individual must have the ability to work up to 16 continuous hours during storm restoration efforts.
HOURS AND TRAVEL
- This position requires the individual to work a minimum of 40 hours per week with a majority of the time spent in the office or specific field locations.
- Travel is required to job sites.
- Individual needs to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with storm or emergency restoration activities.
- Individual should be willing to participate in the on call rotation in case of potential storms.
- Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with storm restoration which may require overnight stays.
